News items:
"First Lady Margo of the ‘Cotswold Gems’ in Bristol, UK had a fantastic surprise on her 75th Birthday recently. Her Chapter organised a trip in a Fire Engine followed by a delicious lunch at The Grange in Winterbourne. Her arrival was heralded by the Siren as the Fire Engine swept into the driveway of the Hotel and made it’s way up to the Entrance where 60 members of the ‘Cotswold Gems’ were awaiting her arrival, complete with Banner and Red Carpet!! Margo said it was a ‘dream come true’ to experience the ride but more especially all the effort and work that had gone into making the occasion such a success. It had been 9-months in the planning and Margo couldn’t believe she didn’t have a clue about all the furtive dealings and subterfuge that had gone on at their meetings throughout the year. ‘Everyone should have a day like I have had today’ was Margo’s final comment." see 'Gallery' for photo

Are you Drawn to the Olympic Flame?
Event for 2012 -Various Dates
As another year dawns we are all busy planning our year ahead and there are some wonderful events coming up.
Now I am by no means drawn to any kind of sport and my pole vaulting days are long gone but.........
I was quite impressed by the fact that the Olympic Flame will be carried for 8,000 miles over 70 days throughout Britain.
I wanted somehow to be be part of it and show support.
So I hope you agree that would be a very nice idea if we Hatters gathered in our Chapter groups to wave it on it's way as it passes through our own areas.
It would be kind of prolonged Mexican wave -although a Brit One in Red Hats.
We could wave it through and then gather for lunch, tea or whatever strikes you as being FUN and we do not even need to go into training.
We could probably get a bit of press coverage too -we always stand out in our colours - and, perhaps more importantly, attract more members and new Chapters to start up.
It starts in Cornwall in May and ripples on up and around the country so should be coming close to you at some point before the opening ceremony.
You can get the schedule from a site called www.ironmate.co.uk /Olympic-Flame-Torch-Relay-Schedule.htm. or look in your local library. Can't promise that it will make us faster, higher or stronger - the Olympic motto - but would add colour to every one's day.
And it's Free. So let's all help to ignite the fire!
Take care

Above the Thoroughly Modern Millies & friends. We are at a recent award ceremony, in the Mayor's Parlour, where our Queen, Elizabeth Hamilton (Eliza Doolittle) received an award from Milton Keynes Council and Age UK - a combined award for enhancing the lives of ladies over the age of 50 in the Milton Keynes area.
We are very proud of Elizabeth who has worked really hard over the last year to achieve a Chapter of 50+ and now opened a second chapter in Milton Keynes (The Thoroughly Modern Mollies)

RED HATTERS TEA PARTY
We sold 69 tickets and there were ladies from 8 chapters there, A1 Hattractions, Bardwell Batty Bees, Bury Belles, Fens Fatales, Fenland Fillies, Gadabout Girls, Norfolk Broads, and of course Sluice Women. It was an afternoon to remember. We broadcast live on Radio Norfolk and we were in the papers. We now have several ladies who are interested in starting up new chapters in East Dereham and possibly King’s Lynn.
I would like to thank Coral for all the hard work she put in to getting the Town Hall for us and for finding the suppliers of the most delicious cakes and the sandwiches and everything else and both Coral and I would like to thank June and Lesley for the sterling work they put in preparing the Town Hall before the Tea Party and helping with all the washing up afterwards.
As most people either donated their foods for free or at minimal cost we were able to make a whopping £535.00 for the Mayor’s charity which is West Norfolk Young Carers. A very big Thank you to all of you who either bought a ticket or made a donation or helped in any way

And another one!
The Red Hatters tea party!
Mersey Ferries recently had the ‘Red Hatters’ aboard for their Liverbird Discovery Cruise.
Inspired by the poem 'Warning' by Jenny Joseph, Red Hatters are a worldwide organisation of ladies aged over
50 whose aim is to grow old disgracefully. They engage in a wide variety of social events and whenever they go
out in a group, must wear purple clothing and a red hat.
Mersey Ferries Sales Officer Sue Taylor (who has her name on the joining list) said: “They were an absolute hoot
and quite a talking point onboard”.

SEPTEMBER 2010
During September the friendships forged at the North West of England’s first ever Red Hat Day in April were reaffirmed when the Liver Birds of Liverpool got together again with the Manchester Ladies with Hattitude, the Lancashire Lasses, and the Silktown Red Hatters from Macclesfield. This time we were also joined by the newly formed Rollicking Rubies from Wrexham, Welsh Wales.
A nature watch cruise (aptly named “The Liver Bird Discovery Cruise”) aboard the Mersey Ferry “Snowdrop” on Liverpool Bay was followed by a pre-theatre meal at a French bistro restaurant and then “Calendar Girls” at the Liverpool Empire. Liver Bird Jean, Lady Poppy, had an idea for our own calendar – she suggested it should be called “You can keep your hat on!” Red of course!
